In September, more than 30 children explored autumn Hungarian traditions and customs at the Treasure Children’s Camp 2023. Over the three days together, the organisers introduced campers to the exciting worlds of harvesting, bread baking, and grape picking.
The children learned how wheat becomes flour and then bread, and they even kneaded and shaped dough themselves in the kitchen. Delicious loaves, pretzels, and braided sweet breads were made. Naturally, butter was churned to go with the bread, making our snack complete.
During craft workshops, participants tried bead stringing, plaster and clay painting. One of the most exciting sessions taught felting techniques, creating colourful balls, beautiful grape clusters, and tulips with their soapy hands. The creations were displayed in the hall each day, and everyone proudly took them home.
We learned and sang many new folk songs and rhymes, and spent time outdoors playing lively traditional games. Older children worked with the poem Az Alföld in connection with the Petőfi Memorial Year, helping them discover the characteristics and natural beauty of the Hungarian plains.
The camp was organised jointly by the Sydney Hungarian Reformed Church and the Hungarian School, with many volunteers from the Hungarian community assisting in its execution. The camp was a wonderful opportunity for children to gain new experiences and friendships while discovering and living Hungarian folk traditions.
