The Hungarian Council in New South Wales considers the preservation, nurturing, and transmission of Hungarian cultural heritage and religious traditions to be a priority for the Hungarian community in Australia. Our mission is to build a bridge between the values of the past and the community life of the present, while supporting individuals who wish to maintain and strengthen their identity, faith, and cultural ties within the diaspora.
This area of activity is closely aligned with our core principle that Hungarian culture and religion are not merely traditions, but living community experiences. Accordingly, our aim is to support and bring together initiatives that create opportunities to celebrate together, pass on traditions, and actively engage with the Hungarian language, music, dance, and intellectual heritage.
Our work includes supporting and coordinating a wide range of cultural events, community programs, and commemorations. These include national celebrations, heritage events, festivals, dance houses, and community gatherings, all of which provide opportunities for people of all generations to connect. Such events, whether centred around folk dance, music, or gastronomy, not only help preserve Hungarian culture, but also promote openness and engagement with the broader Australian society.
Supporting religious life is also an important pillar of this area. The Council works in cooperation with Hungarian-related church communities and initiatives, facilitating the free practice of faith while strengthening both spiritual and communal life. Religious events, such as festive masses, pilgrimages, and ecumenical gatherings, serve not only spiritual purposes, but also play a key role in building and sustaining community, particularly within the diaspora.
We consider it important that members of the Hungarian–Australian community can easily navigate cultural and religious matters. To this end, we provide guidance and help connect individuals with relevant organisations, communities, and opportunities, whether they are seeking traditional groups, church communities, educational initiatives, or cultural programs. As an umbrella organisation, the Council links associations, communities, and individuals, fostering cooperation and the flow of information.
This area of activity is overseen by a designated coordinator, who can be contacted regarding any cultural or religious enquiries. They facilitate connections, assist in finding the appropriate organisations, and support the development and implementation of new initiatives.
