History of the Organization
The Hungarian school has been operating in Sydney since 1975. The institution was originally called Flemington Hungarian School, and since 2019 it has been known as Magyar Iskola Sydney. Since 1978, our school has been a member of the NSW Federation of Community Language Schools, which supports our teachers through structured educational programs and professional conferences. Our operation and curriculum are supervised and administered by the NSW Department of Education.
Our organization maintains close relationships with local Hungarian associations and is also a member of The Hungarian Teachers Association of Australia (AMPE). One of our key missions is to preserve and teach the Hungarian language and cultural traditions to children growing up in Australia. Our educational approach is built on the rich heritage of Hungarian cultural values and the creation of engaging, experience-based lessons.
The school’s program includes preparation for Hungarian national holidays and traditional celebrations, cultural heritage activities, and opportunities for students to perform and participate in events organized by the wider Hungarian community and diplomatic representatives.

Additional Highlights
Our teachers are active members of The Hungarian Teachers Association of Australia (AMPE) and regularly participate in professional development programs both in Australia and Hungary. For several years, the school has successfully applied for grants through the Bethlen Gábor Fund, which supports camps, educational tools, and operational costs.
Every year our teachers and the Parent Committee represent the school at important multicultural and community events, such as The Premier’s Harmony Dinner in NSW, The Community Language Schools Gala Dinner and other multicultural programs organized by the NSW Department of Education.
Our students have received several ministerial awards, and two years ago a former student of our school was selected as the Community Languages Ambassador. The school has also welcomed several distinguished visitors. In 2025, the school hosted Hungarian astronauts Tibor Kapu and Gyula Cserényi, Paralympic champion Dóra Pásztory, as well as Kata Kiss and her band.
