My name is Gyula Kovács, my family and I left Hungary quickly at the end of 1956 following the revolution, and we arrived in Australia at Easter 1957. A few years later, around 1961, we moved to Sydney and settled in Regents Park.
I have been married for over 46 years, I am the father of two daughters and I retired around 2018.
I began my career as an electronics technician, but over the years I took on a variety of jobs. Eventually, I found my place in the world of computers. I spent 35 years at my final workplace, having been with the company almost from the very beginning. The company provided cost management systems for law and accounting firms globally. It was Australian-owned and operated, working in both hardware manufacturing and software development.
I held the role of Global Technical Services Manager, which meant I travelled extensively around the world, installing systems and ensuring they operated smoothly.
I was also active in community life: I spent several years in a dance group, and as I like to say, my sisters often “dragged me into all sorts of activities.”
I now work as the Treasury for the Hungarian Council of NSW since earlier this year.
